  • Reading should serve prayer, should dispose the affections, should neither devour the hours nor gobble up the moments of prayer. When you read you are taught about Christ, but when you pray you join him in familiar colloquy. How much more enchanting is the grace of speaking with him than about him! Sermon 7: Gilbert of Hoyland (Abbot of Swineshead) died 1172.

  • In private prayer it is best to listen and wait upon God, and express ourselves in our own words. Yet many find in reading words of others an encouraging help and stimulus.

  • This little collection of prayers is offered as part of our journey of preparation this Lent. There are examples of a wide variety of prayers from the first years of Christianity right down to the present time. As well as a prayer for each day, there is a reference to one of the Bible readings appointed for the daily Eucharist.

You will find these daily prayers and readings by clicking on the Daily Lent Devotional Prayers and Readings Page.
