After the Fire.

The fire was followed by a substantial rebuild of the east end of the church in 1970, including the new ceiling.

A wonderful stone altar was discovered that had been buried to hide it from Puritan vandalism at the Reformation and is now placed in the centre of the chancel. Click on the image below to see a larger version.

The cleaning of the walls revealed the sensational medieval wall paintings that are one of the great historic attractions of this important, Grade 1 listed church.

After the fire, a new east window was commissioned from the eminent 20th century stained glass artist and designer, John Hayward (1929-2007), who completed 200 windows in churches, including the magnificent west window in Sherborne Abbey. The Organ was replaced after the fire.

The current pipe organ is located on the west wall of the nave above the tower arch and played from a detached console in the north aisle.
It was built by the former Lincoln firm of Cousans in 1971 to replace the 1881 Wordsworth and Maskell organ which stood in the north of the Bodley chancel and was destroyed by the fire of 1969. The new case, designed to harmonise with the Bodley and Garner ceiling of the nave, was designed by LH Bond.
