Tower Project 2025-2026
Thanks to National Lottery Players
We are basing our project on biblical principles:
Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain
(Psalm 127:1).
You must count the cost and plan before building a tower, lest you be unable to finish it (Luke 14:28-30).
Why is it necessary?
The wood supporting the underside of the lead sheets on the tower roof has rotted away. This is letting rain into the fabric of the tower and bell ringing room leading to deterioration of stonework and the timber roof of the tower. It has been identified as critically in need of repair as it presents a severe risk of failure or injury. This project addresses these immediate threats to preserve this historic landmark and ensure the church’s safety and continued use by the community. The clock faces and mechanisms will also be renovated.
We are planning to start the work in the spring of 2026 & are expecting the works to take approximately 16 weeks.
Specialist firms are being appointed to undertake the work. We thank all who have worked so far on the project, particularly Irving Patrick. We look forward to working with everyone to bring this project to completion.
The Capital works will include:
• Essential repairs to the tower roof, timber structure
and rainwater goods.
• Extensive high-level stone repair/replacement to the parapets, pinnacles and repointing of the tower.
• Conservation of the clock faces and refurbishment
of the clock mechanism
(clock specialist to undertake repairs by separate appointment).
• Connecting and engaging visitors and the local community with
All Saints’ Church architectural and historical significance.

Heritage
As part of the project (both during and after) we wish to engage people, particuarly village residents, with the natural and built heritage of the church and the village. We aim to do this in the following ways:
-
Stories of All Saints - Using the memorials and headstones in the churchyard to inspire family historians, storytellers and local research by facilitating a personal dimension to heritage engagement.
-
Saints and Seasons Heritage And Nature Trail - A self guided trail in the churchyard which blends heritage and biodiversity by developing a beautifully illustrated and digital guide to help people identify headstones, memorials, the people they commemorate as well as flora and fauna. This will include the churchyard, the nearby cemetery and the Bishop's Palace site.
-
A Tower of Strength - Community engagement events will be staged, where residents can watch conservation specialists at work, listen to talks and volunteer-led tours and try new activities in hands-on workshops
