Demonstration by one of the stonemasons, working on the tower project, making a mason's mark - these are the signature of the mason, similar to how an artist would sign his/her painting. These were added by a stone mason to each stone they worked on, although hidden from view in the final placement of the stone. The work would be checked and signed off by the Master Mason and enable the mason to be paid.
